Manchester United must dust themselves down this week before a huge Europa League clash on Thursday night.
Ruben Amorim’s first few months in charge of the club went from bad to worse on Sunday as United crashed out of the FA Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham.
It leaves just the Europa League as a potential avenue for success for the Red Devils boss during what remains of the season and few would back them to make genuine in-roads in that competition.
United do not fully convince and Thursday’s opponents Real Sociedad will fancy their chances unless Amorim can find an extra gear from somewhere.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Manchester United injuries….
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire has re-established himself as a key player at United after so much criticism over the years.
The defender is even being touted for a potential return to the England squad as new manager Thomas Tuchel prepares to name his first squad later this month.
However, the centre-back’s resurgence was dealt a blow on Sunday after Maguire was forced off injured just before extra-time to be replaced by young Ayden Heaven.
Asked about the defender after the game, Amorim said: “I have to see how Harry Maguire is. It’s a tough moment in that aspect, but we have to move on. We will be a competitive team on Thursday.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Kobbie Mainoo
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has not played since early February due to a muscle injury, which was reportedly set to keep him out for around six weeks.
Amorim last week confirmed the England man was “still recovering”, with no other update given on his fitness.
With that in mind, it remains to be seen when he will return but it’s seem fair to suggest that it will not be imminent.
Potential return date: Unknown
Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw has hardly featured for United for over a year now after a succession of injuries both before and after England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.
The defender returned to training earlier this year but Shaw suffered a fresh setback on his return to full fitness following a muscle problem last month.
Amorim recently confirmed he still did not know when Shaw could return.
Potential return date: Unknown
Mason Mount
Mason Mount’s United career is yet to get going, having suffered injuries both this season and last.
The former Chelsea midfielder had looked set to become a key player under Amorim but Mount suffered a hamstring injury during the win over Manchester City in December and has not played since.
The United boss recently said Mount “continues to make his recovery”, so his return date is also unclear.
Potential return date: Unknown
Toby Collyer
The news regarding young Toby Collyer, however, is more promising.
Collyer has emerged as a first-team option this season in what has been a rare bright spot for the club, who of course boast a proud tradition in developing their own talents.
He was ruled out of the defeat at Tottenham last month with an unspecified issue but Amorim recently hinted he was relatively close to a comeback.
Potential return date: March/April 2025
Altay Bayindir
Altay Bayindir may have been used in the FA Cup game against Fulham, such has been the trend of rotating goalkeepers of late.
However, he suffered a “problem” back in February and there is still no update on either what the issue is or when he could return.
Potential return date: Unknown
Amad Diallo
Amad Diallo has been one of United’s key players this season and perhaps the only one to have hit new heights under Amorim.
Still, perhaps in keeping with United’s luck this season, Amad is expected to miss the rest of the season following an ankle ligament injury sustained in training last month.
“Amad is out, for sure, I think until the end of season,” said the United boss.
“Amad was alone [when he got injured]. He was doing a tackle. The feet were stuck in the grass.”
Potential return date: Summer 2025
Jonny Evans
There has been no update on the fitness of veteran defender Jonny Evans since he was ruled out with a calf problem back in December.
Potential return date: Unknown
Lisandro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez is facing an extended period out of action.
Martinez suffered an ACL injury suffered last month and could be facing months on the sidelines as a result.
It remains to be seen if the Argentine is in line to return for the start of next season or if he will be ruled out for even longer.
Potential return date: Unknown
